Have your energy bills risen significantly in 2021? You’re far from alone! With wholesale energy prices returning to pre-pandemic levels, and the Ofgem Energy Price Cap rising, many of us have seen our energy prices hike this year. Especially those of us who are on variable-rate tariffs. If your fixed-rate deal with your supplier expired recently, this includes you! Variable-rate deals can offer great value for money when wholesale energy costs are low. But when they climb, they can send variable rates rising.
The good news is that you can switch to a new supplier at any time while on a variable-rate tariff. And if you’re looking for the familiarity of a big brand combined with impressive green credentials, Scottish Power may be the supplier for you!
Who are Scottish Power?
Along with the recently merged N.Power and E.On, EDF, SSE and British Gas, Scottish Power is one of the biggest energy suppliers in the UK.At the time of writing, they have around 5 million customers in total.
But according to the energy experts at Switch-Plan Scottish Power leaves the rest of the “Big 6” in the dust when it comes to renewability. Their tariffs are often also counted as some of the cheapest of the UK’s larger suppliers. While other suppliers buy renewable energy wholesale, Scottish Power generates its own, with a substantial investment in 22 wind farms across the country. In January 2019, they became the first integrated supplier to offer 100% renewable electricity.
If you want a renewable energy plan, and want the assurance that comes with a big name, Scottish Power is a very safe bet.
Are Scottish Power cheap?
Scottish Power has a substantial range of tariffs, including exclusive energy plans that are only available directly through the brand. Two of these allow customers to donate to Cancer Research UK by paying their energy bills.
Average electricity rates for their fixed-rate tariffs are 18.9 p for electricity and 3.46 p per kWh for gas according to Switch-Plan. Among the “Big 6” Scottish Power’s rates are often among the cheapest, especially when compared with British Gas.
Do Scottish Power offer any other services?
As well as offering a wide range of renewable energy tariffs, Scottish Power has services available exclusively for EV drivers. These range from EV tariffs that give you cheaper overnight charging to helping to set up a smart EV charger in your home. They offer smart meters to help you keep track of your energy usage, and keep your energy bills low. They also offer a range of boiler cover and servicing plans. So you can protect your home’s heating infrastructure at a reasonable price.
There’s no doubt that renewable energy is the future of the UK market. With Scottish Power you can get a great renewable energy deal from a well-known name. If you’re apprehensive about casting your lot with a smaller supplier, you could do worse than take a look at what they have to offer.
